Local historian Brian Curran expressed his devastation, calling it "a gut punch for Hollywood preservation." The city's Cultural Heritage Commission had already begun the process of designating the home as a historic-cultural monument, with a site visit scheduled for that very week. Sadly, it was too late. The home, which also appeared in films like "L.A. Confidential" and "The Rockford Files," is now a pile of charred wood.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the fire, rescuing a 42-year-old man from the second floor. Despite the efforts of 70 firefighters, the blaze was relentless.
The property owner, Andranik Sogoyan, had repeatedly attempted to secure the building, but it was continuously breached. Sadly, the property had become a haven for transients after being foreclosed on and vacated in late 2024.
This incident is not an isolated event. There were two smaller fires at the property in the months leading up to the final, devastating blaze. This prompted Hollywood Heritage, a non-profit dedicated to preserving the neighborhood's history, to express their grief.
And this is the part most people miss... The organization emphasized that the building could have been restored and repurposed. Now, the community has lost a valuable piece of its past due to neglect.
Almost exactly a year prior, the 111-year-old Morrison Hotel, featured on the cover of The Doors' album, met a similar fate.
The 1905 home, originally called "El Nido," or "the nest," was a prime example of Shingle architecture. It featured an asymmetrical façade, multiple gables, overhanging eaves, and more.
In 1956, six smaller buildings were added, and the Hollywood Center Motel was born. The motel's iconic look made it a popular filming location for TV shows like "Perry Mason" and "T.J. Hooker." In 1986, it became the scene of a real crime.
The motel closed in 2018, and was foreclosed on and vacated in late 2024. The new owner had submitted demolition permits, prompting the effort to secure monument status. The owner supported the monument effort.
