A man has been charged for allegedly showcasing Nazi symbols through his tattoos at a well-frequented beach in New South Wales, leading to significant community outrage.
On December 24, Ben Parsons was enjoying a day at Bar Beach in Newcastle with his children when he encountered another beachgoer displaying tattoos that are closely associated with white supremacist beliefs, including markings tied to the notorious Nazi SS.
Parsons described the man as being quite boisterous and disruptive during his time at the beach. “He was speaking really loudly and just kind of being pretty obnoxious,” Parsons recounted in an interview with Guardian Australia. “When he turned around, I caught a glimpse of the tattoos on his leg.”
According to Parsons, the individual—who had another woman and children accompanying him—bore a conspicuous white power tattoo running up his calf, along with an emblem of the Schutzstaffel (SS), which was the elite guard of Hitler's regime infamous for its role in committing horrific acts during the Holocaust, displayed near his ankle.
In response to this alarming sight, Parsons decided to document the man’s tattoos by taking photographs. Shortly after, the man made a gesture commonly associated with white supremacy before leaving the beach.
Determined to take action against such displays of hate, Parsons reported the incident to Crime Stoppers and provided a detailed statement to the New South Wales police, particularly to Operation Shelter, which is the task force dedicated to addressing antisemitic incidents.
Parsons emphasized the importance of standing up against racist ideologies, stating, "We all need to be the best Australians we can be at the moment and show solidarity and unity and call out racism and fascism when we see it." His words resonate strongly in a society where confronting such issues is crucial for fostering inclusivity.
Later that Saturday, detectives from Coffs Harbour arrested a 36-year-old man at his residence in Urunga, located south of Coffs Harbour, around 6:30 PM, as confirmed by a statement from the NSW police.
The man was subsequently taken to the Coffs Harbour police station, where he was charged with knowingly displaying a Nazi symbol in public without justification, as well as causing a prohibited Nazi symbol to be exhibited in a public space.
He has since been granted strict conditional bail and is expected to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
