In a thrilling display of determination, Donovan Mitchell put on an extraordinary performance in the fourth quarter, scoring an impressive 24 points and leading his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to a remarkable comeback victory over the Washington Wizards.
The game, which took place on Friday night, saw the Cavaliers down by a substantial 15 points with only one quarter left to play against one of the NBA's weakest teams. Mitchell, with a sense of urgency, stepped up his game, scoring 24 of his total 48 points in that decisive final period. This incredible effort not only helped his team secure a 130-126 win but also earned him the title of having the highest-scoring fourth quarter in the entire NBA season so far.
"Be aggressive," Mitchell emphasized post-game. "We couldn't afford to lose this game, especially coming off a break."
Both teams had a five-day break leading up to the game, but the Cavaliers' shooting performance was less than stellar, hitting only 15 of their 53 attempts from beyond the arc. Mitchell's 8-for-15 shooting from three-point range kept them in the game.
The Wizards, who fell to a disappointing 3-20 record this season, found themselves unable to stop Mitchell's onslaught in the fourth quarter. He scored 11 points in just over two minutes at the start of the period, and his total of 24 points in the quarter surpassed Jett Howard's previous high of 22 points for the season.
Mitchell's average of 9.6 points per game in the fourth quarter is the best in the league, showcasing his ability to step up when it matters most.
"When you're playing a team with a record like the Wizards, and you're down by 15, it's easy to lose heart and give in," Mitchell reflected. "But we found the strength to fight back."
The Cavaliers trailed by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, allowing the Wizards to score 40 points in that period alone. Going into the fourth, the score was 100-85 in favor of the Wizards. However, Mitchell's tenacity paid off as he tied the game at 122 with a crucial three-pointer and then scored inside with just a minute left on the clock to give Cleveland the lead.
There was a moment of levity when the 6'3" Mitchell found himself in a jump ball situation against the much taller 6'11" Marvin Bagley III. Both players mistimed their jumps, and the ball fell to Cleveland's Lonzo Ball, who made two free throws with just over 30 seconds left on the clock, giving the Cavaliers a four-point lead.
While Mitchell was pleased with the win, he acknowledged the need to address the large deficit they faced.
"We can't let that happen again. We need to find a way to avoid getting into those situations," he said.
