Puma's Sales Plunge: A Year of Reset and Revitalization
The German sportswear brand Puma ended 2025 with a disappointing sales decline, but is now poised for a comeback.
The brand's annual sales took a hit, dropping 8.1% to €7.29 billion, a stark contrast to the previous year's €8.39 billion. However, this performance was slightly better than market expectations. The fourth quarter was particularly disheartening, with sales plummeting 20.1% to €1.56 billion, adjusted for currency fluctuations.
Puma's CEO, Arthur Hoeld, attributed this decline to a strategic reset, aiming to return the brand to above-industry growth and sustainable profits. The company's initiatives included streamlining its product portfolio, cutting costs, and reducing promotional activities. Hoeld, who previously worked for Adidas, took the reins in July and initiated a 'clean-up' process.
The impact of these changes was evident in the fourth quarter, with double-digit sales drops across all regions. This led to a 6.9% decrease in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and a 7.4% fall in the Asia-Pacific region over the year. The Americas saw the steepest decline, with a 10% drop in sales.
Puma's product categories also faced challenges, with footwear sales down 7.1%, apparel sales down 9.7%, and accessories sales down 8.5%, all adjusted for currency fluctuations. These declines prompted the company to reevaluate its strategies and focus on streamlining sales in North America, where excessive discounting had become a concern.
Despite the tough year, Puma's EBIT, a key indicator of financial health, remained in the black, albeit at a reduced level. In 2024, EBIT stood at nearly €550 million, but by the end of 2025, it had fallen to a loss of €357.2 million. This performance still exceeded analysts' expectations.
Puma's outlook for 2026 is cautious, with sales expected to continue declining in the low to mid-single digits. The company anticipates EBIT to remain in the red, between -€50 million and -€150 million. However, this year marks a pivotal moment for Puma, as it embarks on a journey of transformation and growth, aiming to emerge stronger and more resilient in the years to come.
