A heartfelt tribute to a legendary co-star: Genie Francis reminisces about Anthony Geary.
In the world of daytime television, few names resonate as strongly as Laura and Luke Spencer from the iconic soap opera, 'General Hospital'. These characters, brought to life by Genie Francis and the late Anthony Geary, captivated audiences for an incredible 37 years.
Francis, in a recent interview with ABC News, shared her memories of Geary, who passed away at the age of 78. She described him as a warm, sensitive, and hilariously funny man, who took a protective role towards her during their early years on the show.
"We knew we were doing something special, something unique," Francis said. "[Television producer] Gloria Monty predicted we'd change the face of daytime television, and we did. We were thrilled to be a part of that history."
Their on-screen chemistry was undeniable, and it earned them both Daytime Emmy Awards. In 1981, when their characters tied the knot, an astonishing 30 million Americans tuned in to witness the wedding on 'General Hospital'.
Geary himself reflected on their success in a 2013 interview with 'Good Morning America'. "It was like lightning in a bottle," he said. "An unexpected phenomenon that swept the nation. I'm grateful to have been a part of such a significant piece of television history."
Cameron Mathison, a current cast member of 'General Hospital', admired Geary from a young age and recalled his impact on the industry. "The Luke and Laura days were massive. They were celebrities in their own right. Their impact was immense."
Francis, now 63, expressed her grief over the loss of her longtime partner. "I'm devastated, truly sad. But I'm also incredibly fortunate to have had Anthony as my first leading man. He set the bar so high, I'm not sure anyone could ever match up to him."
And this is the part most people miss: the impact these actors had on each other's lives, and the legacy they left behind. It's a reminder of the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on both the performers and the audience.
