Sydney Sweeney's Stand Against Hate: A Controversial Ad and Its Aftermath
In a recent interview with People magazine, Sydney Sweeney opened up about the backlash she faced earlier this year due to her involvement in an American Eagle jeans campaign. The ad, which featured the tagline "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans," sparked a heated debate online, with many interpreting it as a glorification of her white heritage and physique.
"I was taken aback by the reaction," Sweeney shared. "I agreed to the campaign because I genuinely love the jeans and the brand. I do not condone the views that some people associated with it. Many have made assumptions about my motives and labeled me unfairly."
Sweeney emphasized her commitment to unity and her stance against hate and divisiveness. "I've always aimed to bring people together. I stand against hate and the forces that divide us," she added. Sweeney's silence on the matter for several months was a deliberate choice, but she eventually realized that her silence might have inadvertently widened the gap between opposing views.
"I've come to understand that my silence has only exacerbated the divide. So, I hope this new year brings a shift in focus towards what unites us rather than what sets us apart."
The controversy surrounding the ad gained national attention, with White House communications manager Steven Cheung describing the backlash as a prime example of "cancel culture run amok." Vice President JD Vance also joined the conversation, mocking liberals for their reaction to the campaign. Even former President Donald Trump weighed in, expressing his support for Sweeney and her ad after learning she was a registered Republican.
"It was surreal to have Trump and Vance commenting on the ads," Sweeney admitted. However, she chose to distance herself from the controversy, focusing on her work. "I put my phone away and immersed myself in my projects. I was filming 'Euphoria' daily, working long hours, and I didn't bring my phone on set. So, I wasn't actively engaged with the controversy."
Sweeney's next project, "The Housemaid," is set to release in theaters on December 19. To learn more about her perspective on the matter, head over to People magazine's website for the full interview.
